DSP wanted in antique idols smuggling case arrested

A special team of the Idol Wing CID on Wednesday night arrested Deputy Superintendent of Police Khader Basha on the charge of committing armed robbery of antique idols near Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district in 2008.

The DSP who had been on the run since February after the Idol Wing CID kept tracking his movements was apprehended at Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district on Wednesday night.

Idol Wing sources told The Hindu that the arrested DSP was produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court at Kumbakonam and remanded in judicial custody. He was later lodged in the Tiruchi Central Prison.

The sources said the DSP allegedly robbed three idols from a person near Aruppukottai . The idols were sold abroad for which he allegedly received hefty sums of money.

Ever since the Idol Wing CID took up investigation, Khader Basha who was DSP in Tiruvallur district, absconded.
