Drop ‘creamy layer’ concept: Karunanidhi

May 19, 2013 02:39 am | Updated 02:39 am IST - CHENNAI:

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Saturday urged the Centre to dispense with the ‘creamy layer’ concept while implementing reservation.

He also demanded that the present annual income limit for exclusion from the purview of backward class reservation be raised to Rs 12 lakh for people in the rural areas.

In a statement here, he said that the DMK had been opposing the adoption of any economic yardstick in reservation and the exclusion of the economically empowered sections from availing of its benefits.

“Reservation is not a weapon for eradication of poverty, but a right conferred by the Constitution on the socially and educationally backward sections,” Mr. Karunanidhi said.
