DRM rules out NMR summer special

May 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - COONOOR:

There is no feasibility for operating special train services of the Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) during the ongoing summer season, said Divisional Railway Manager – Salem Subhranshu on Saturday.

This has come at a time when there is a growing demand for special train services as the tourist inflow was swelling day by day to the popular hill station.

He was talking to reporters after inspecting the Coonoor railway station and the workshop of the NMR.

At present the NMR services between Mettuppalayam and Coonoor were being operated with three coaches and from Coonoor to Udhagamandalam with five coaches.

Enhancing the number of coaches was being studied, however, given the steep gradient on the Kallar – Coonoor section operation of the train with more coaches was proving to be difficult, he said.

Given the vulnerability of the terrain and frequenting of wild animals along the NMR section, additional services were not being operated taking into account the safety of the passengers, he said.
