The Vellore district administration has decided to conduct a drive to check the safety status of the borewells / open wells in the residential localities and private lands in the rural areas of the district on May 26 and 27.

According to a release from the District Collector, land owners and borewell rig operators have been issued guidelines through a government order on the procedures to be followed for drilling borewells and the safety protocol to be observed in respect of the work.

In pursuance to the G.O., the district administration has planned the drive to have the borewells and open wells inspected to check whether the safety protocol has been followed, and whether the borewells have been closed and the open wells constructed in such a way as not to endanger the lives of children / people.

The inspection would be carried out by committees comprising panchayat union employees, village panchayat presidents and other representatives, overhead tank operators, sanitary workers. and representatives of non-governmental organisations.

If, during the inspection, any borewell or unused borewell / open well were found to be kept open endangering the lives of children / people, immediate steps would be taken to close them.

The Collector has appealed to the public to offer full cooperation to the committees during the inspection.
