The Dravidar Kazhagam has advocated total prohibition all over the country for the welfare of society.

“ Even school students are getting addicted to liquor in the State. Liquor has ruined many families and will immensely affect the future of the students belonging to the weaker sections and backward communities,” Dravidar Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani told journalists here on Sunday.

“Implementation of total prohibition in Tamil Nadu alone would not help. There is every chance of liquor flowing into Tamil Nadu from the neighbouring States. Hence, total prohibition in the entire country is the need of the hour,” Mr. Veeramani said. The resolution was adopted at the general body meeting of the party here on Sunday.

Referring to the Karnataka government’s decision to build check-dams across the Cauvery, Mr. Veeramani said the State should condemn the action in one voice, sinking political differences. Unfortunately, there was no unity among the people of Tamil Nadu even in dealing with such a serious issue.

The ruling AIADMK should take the lead in forging unity among the people of Tamil Nadu to safeguard the interests of the State.

Mr. Veeramani came down heavily on the Centre for saffronising the education system. “The education portfolio was on the State list till the Emergency. Only during the Emergency was it shifted to the concurrent list, and the Narendra Modi government is now taking advantage of it. The education portfolio should be reverted to the State list,” he said.
