Voluntary service wings of the police such as the Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Wardens and the Home Guards are taking efforts to draft transgenders into the force.
The Director General of Police (DGP) for Civil Defence and Home Guards K. Muthukaruppan too in a recent visit to the city asked Home Guards officials to invite transgenders to join the force. In the early 2014, Madurai became a trendsetter in the State by inducting six transgenders as Home Guards. As Home Guards they could serve the people and also earn Rs. 150 per day when they were called to assist the police in traffic management and other policing activities.
The Home Guards officials of the Coimbatore District Unit said that efforts to induct transgenders were taken about a year ago. They said that a set of applications were sent to the police to verify their background — as done for any applicant who wishes to join the Home Guards.
B. Balaji, Area Commander of Home Guards, Coimbatore District, said that usually a 45- day training is given to persons newly inducted to the force. He added that the training period could be extended by a few more days for transgenders.
