Dr. Alwar to head V-C selection committee

A series of allegations were made against then Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University

May 01, 2014 02:21 am | Updated 02:21 am IST - CHENNAI:

Neurosurgeon S. Alwar will head the three-member search committee constituted to recommend three names to the Chancellor for appointment as Vice Chancellor of the Annamalai University.

Dr. Alwar, retired professor of Neurosurgery, Madras Medical College, will be the convener of the committee. P. Gunasekaran, Vice Chancellor of Tiruvalluvar University, Vellore; and C. Murukadas, member of the Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Commission and a retired professor of Economics from the University of Madras, are the other members.

Applicants must submit their curriculum vitae by May 19.

At present Shiv Das Meena, senior IAS officer, functions as the government-appointed administrator of the university and performs the role of the vice chancellor.

A series of allegations, including misappropriation of funds and nepotism, were made against then VC, M. Ramanathan.

A special audit team found that the university had diverted funds to the hospital and appropriated the provident fund and contributory pension fund. It had not remitted the pension contribution and there were lapses in collecting the dues.

Also, the university had made excessive appointments and fixed salaries arbitrarily.

In April 2013, Governor K. Rosaiah, in his capacity as the Chancellor, ordered the suspension of Dr. Ramanathan for lapses in the university administration and mishandling of financial affairs and the university was taken over by the government.

Management asks staff to declare assets

A. V. Ragunathan reports from Cuddalore:

Annamalai University Registrar N. Panchanatham has sent a notice to all departments, directing the teaching and non-teaching staff to declare their assets.

It is reliably learnt from university sources that the Registrar has sent a notice as per the decision taken by the university Syndicate at its recent meeting in Chennai.

As per the notice, all staff would have to declare the movable and immovable property, bank deposits, insurance policies and other investments in their names as well as that of their family members or dependents.

They are required to get the prescribed forms from the establishment centre and return the duly filled in forms. Coordinator of the Joint Action Council of the Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff Associations S.Mathiyalagan said that the notice was said to have been sent to conform to the conduct rules fixed by the government.

Mr. Mathiyalagan said, “Though all staff would have to comply with the rules it is not clear, why the university management is seeking those particulars at this point of time and what it would do with such data.”
