‘Don’t take nature for granted’

Protection of the ecology is being accorded the highest priority by the Church of South India (CSI), according to the Bishop of Coimbatore Diocese Right Reverend Timothy Ravinder.

Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of a two-day Earth Day celebration of the CSI, which got under way here on Tuesday, he said that the message being driven into all those the diocese comes into contact with is that nature should no longer be taken for granted. The focus is on making all aspects of the diocese green. Pointing out that all the institutions under the CSI umbrella have been asked to declare a war on litter particularly plastics, he said that around 2.25 lakh members of the Coimbatore diocese in about nine districts are now engaged in this exercise. Many of them are youth.

Items of daily use such as cups, plates and bags should be eco friendly. Strict orders have been issued to preserve trees in all the institutions run by the diocese and if felling of a tree becomes unavoidable five should be planted by way of compensation.
