State electricity commission says service problems should be taken to redressal forums

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has requested consumers not to lodge complaints pertaining to billing, meters and power supply with it

They should instead lodge complaints related to services rendered by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (Tangedco) with their respective Consumers Grievance Redressal Forums (CGRF).

Stating this, a press release from TNERC on Monday said the Commission was not the correct forum to deal with such matters.

The statement was made as the Commission has been receiving a number of letters on consumer grievances on various issues such as incorrect billing, delay in the issue of new service connections, defective meters and supply of electricity.

In each circle (corresponding to almost a district), the CGRF is headed by the superintending engineer of the circle concerned. When a consumer approaches the CGRF, an acknowledgment for the receipt of such a petition should be given within seven working days.

The CGRF, the release said, should pass orders on the petition/complaints within two months. If the complainant is not satisfied with the order or has not received any reply within two months from the date of filing the complaint, he/she can appeal to the electricity ombudsman in the office of TNERC in Chennai.

In case of grievances of a common nature spread over the jurisdiction of more than one CGRF, it could be brought to the notice of the ombudsman. consumer association.

Details regarding the CGRF are available on the white meter cards as well on the TNERC and Tangedco websites.
