Doctors remove 18-kg tumour from 42-year-old patient’s uterus

Doctors at the Government Theni Medical College Hospital at Gandamanur pass removed a tumour weighing 18 kg from the uterus of a 42-year-old woman here on Wednesday.

A team of doctors, comprising Thangamani, Shantha Devi, Muthu Raj, Lalitha and Vijaya, performed the surgery on the woman, Caroline Mary, and removed the tumour successfully.

Mrs. Mary was admitted to the Theni Government Medical College Hospital with complaints of abdominal distension and mass for the past 10 months. The size of the tumour was 40 cm x 26 cm x 24 cm.

It was called giant uterine fibroid. It was the second such a major removal of tumour from uterus in the State.

A tumour weighing 15 kg was removed at a Chennai hospital last year, they added.

“It is yet another milestone in the history of the government hospital,” Dean R.M. Raja Muthiah said.
