The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government will continue to work for the State, Tamils and Tamil language despite being humiliated by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), DMK president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Wednesday.
Addressing a public meeting at the Pennagaram grounds in support of his party nominee P.N.P. Inbasekaran, the DMK leader said the AIADMK kept insulting the ruling party when it extended invitations to the principal Opposition party.
Adverting to the AIADMK's complaint that no formal invitation was sent to the party for the inauguration of the Assembly-Secretariat complex recently, Mr. Karunanidhi asserted that the Opposition party was invited in a proper manner.
He also referred to the personal invitation extended by the Deputy Chief Minister to AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa for the inauguration of the Kalaignar Housing Scheme in Tiruchi early this month and said the AIADMK leader wrote back saying she had some other engagements. But, she did not send any representative either.
He also deplored the act of AIADMK Members of Legislative Assembly wearing black attire to express their protest on the issue of invitation for the inauguration of the complex. Criticising the AIADMK for its style of functioning in the Assembly, the DMK leader said that if elected, the Opposition party's candidate would not highlight issues concerning the Pennagaram constituency.
Rebutting the charge of the AIADMK general secretary that the DMK government had neglected Pennagaram, DMK treasurer and Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said it was because of the efforts of former MLA P.N. Periyannan, who is no more, that the State government decided to set up an arts and science college and upgrade the taluk hospital in the area.
The Hogenakkal drinking water and flurosis project will be completed well ahead of the deadline, as done in the case of Ramanathapuram combined water supply project, Mr. Stalin assured.
K.V. Thangkabalu, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, said the DMK-Congress alliance would continue for the next election too and no one could harm it.
D. Sudarssanam, Congress Legislature Party leader, wondered how Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss could criticise the DMK of betrayal when Mr. Karunanidhi got Cabinet berth for his son Anbumani Ramadoss in the Union government in 2004 though Dr. Anbumani did not have experience in Parliament or legislature.
