The DMK on Wednesday wrote to Vice-President Hamid Ansari, seeking the removal of Markandey Katju as Chairman of the Press Council of India (PCI).

The former Supreme Court judge recently accused the DMK indirectly of interfering in judicial appointments.

The allegation then escalated into a face-off between Mr. Katju and DMK president M. Karunanidhi.

In the letter, also sent to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, DMK legal wing secretary K.S. Bharathi said the party was writing the letter to bring to notice the various omissions and commissions of Mr. Katju, which amounted to misconduct and proven misbehaviour.

The letter said Mr. Katju, since he assumed office as PCI Chairman, had been issuing controversial statements and criticising political leaders, parliamentarians, legislators, and now the judiciary.

The letter also listed Mr. Katju’s controversial statements, including his comments on the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 Gujarat riots.
