Condemning the hike in water charges and deposit amount for water connection by the Namakkal Municipality, Darvida Munnetra Kazhagam cadre have proposed to stage a protest on July 28.

The municipality is implementing the Rs. 190.40 crore Water Supply Improvement Scheme for residents in all the 39 wards.

Resolution

During the council meeting held last week, a resolution was adopted to hike water charges for each house from Rs. 60 to Rs. 150 and the deposit for each connection from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000. DMK and Congress councillors opposed the move and staged a walkout.

A meeting was held recently to decide the next course of action in which district DMK treasurer Bar. Elangovan presided over the meeting.

Speakers said that the hike would affect the common people and condemned the municipality’s move.
