The DMK has pulled out of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) not because of affection or concern for the Sri Lankan Tamils, but only because it was looking for an opportune time to dump the UPA, Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss said on Thursday. The DMK had used the Sri Lankan Tamils issue only as a pretext.
“If the DMK had real love for the Elam Tamils, it would have stopped the war in 2009 and protected the Sri Lankan Tamils and also prevented wiping out of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam that was fighting against the Sri Lankan Government,” he told reporters here on Thursday. A delegation of MPs that visited Sri Lanka to press for rehabilitation of the Tamils ended up appreciating the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The Centre had betrayed the Tamils by diluting the US-sponsored resolution deliberated in the United Nations Human Rights Council. “Instead of condemning the Sri Lankan Government, the resolution has been made to appreciate the island nation,” he charged.
PMK believed that formation of Tamil Elam could be the only solution to the problems of Sri Lankan Tamils. On the ban imposed by the Madurai District Collector, Anshul Mishra, on his visit based on complaints made by a few people who apprehended caste clashes, Mr. Ramadoss said he had been visiting Madurai and southern districts since 1992 and never had his visit led to any clash.
“It was me who first organised for peace among the two caste groups that clashed in 1992. I am founder of a responsible opposition party and no one has any right to ban my entry anywhere in the State,” he said.
