The DMK is not averse to joining the government in the Union Territory of Puducherry as the partner of Congress.
Sources in the DMK said when the Puducherry Chief Minister-designate and Congress leader V. Narayanasamy met DMK president M. Karunanidhi in Chennai on Sunday, the latter handed over the letter of support of two DMK legislators to him.
The Congress has won 15 seats in the 30-Member territorial Assembly and the DMK two. A party needs 16 MLAs to form the government. Thus, the Congress would need the backing of the DMK to stay in power.
“We [DMK] have not made any conditions for our support. But if the Congress wants, we do not mind joining the government in Puducherry,” said a senior DMK leader.
Speaking to reporters after meeting Mr. Karunanidhi, Mr. Narayanasamy said the DMK and Congress leadership will discuss and decide about sharing power.
On the violence that broke after he was elected the leader of the Congress Legislative Party, he said all issues have been resolved amicably. About the possibility of Puducherry Congress president A. Namassivayam getting a ministerial berth, he said it was for the party high command to decide.
