DMK members walk out of Ooty Council meet

November 01, 2014 11:44 am | Updated 11:44 am IST - Udhagamandalam:

DMK members staged a walkout from the Udhagamandalam Municipal Council meeting held here on Friday.

J. Ravikumar, Town Secretary of the DMK, said that it was to focus attention on the mounting civic issues and the conspicuous absence of efforts on the part of the civic administration to deal with them.

Unauthorised constructions

Adverting to unauthorised constructions in the hill station, he said that buildings put up by the poor and those without resources are being targeted by the municipality, while those of the rich are being let off.

Parking

Pointing out that problems relating to parking are proliferating, Mr. Ravikumar regretted that nothing tangible was being done to set right matters.

Referring to the poor standard of sanitation in the town, he said that sewage was overflowing at many places. In many parts of the town street lights were not serving their purpose.

‘Funds constraint’

Thambi Ismail (DMDK) regretted that funds constraint was being cited even for filling up potholes.

Municipal Chairman K. Sathyabama, who presided, said that steps would be taken to address all the issues raised by the members.
