In a significant development, the DMK members in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday supported the demand of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) for expunging what they described as “unparliamentary words” used by Housing Minister R. Vaithilingam.
Even after the DMDK members staged a walkout after Speaker P. Dhanpal refused to expunge the words “odukali” uttered by Mr. Vaithilingam, the DMK members continued to argue with him. They were subsequently evicted from the House.
The trouble started after DMDK deputy leader Alagapurm Mohandas rose to demand expunction of the remarks by Mr. Vaithilingam. But the Minister explained that there was nothing wrong in his comments as the members left the House without listening to his explanation.
“They could have stayed back and listened to me. If they had any doubts they could have clarified with me. But they preferred to stage a walkout,” he said.
The DMDK members left the House after the Speaker made it clear that there was nothing unparliamentary in the remarks of Mr. Vaithilingam. But the DMK members went to the Speaker and entered into an argument with him. He asked the watch and ward staff of the Assembly to evict them.
The DMK members left the House raising slogans against the Speaker and his decision.
