: The DMK high command on Sunday sent a strong warning to supporters of Union Minister and the party's south zone organising secretary M.K. Alagiri by expelling Madurai City District presidium chairman K. Esakimuthu from the primary membership of the party.

“He is not eligible even to renew his membership when a fresh membership drive begins,” party general secretary K. Anbazhagan said in a statement. Mr Esakimuthu was one of the party functionaries who had boycotted the party treasurer M.K. Stalin's recent visit to Madurai in connection with the selection of office-bearers for the youth wing. When Mr Stalin brought the issue to the notice of the high command, the organising secretary, T.K.S. Elangovan, sent a show-cause notice to functionaries in Madurai, seeking explanation for the boycott. Mr Esakimuthu, in his response, stated that Mr Elangoavan had no right to question his action.

“By sending such a response, he has violated party discipline and he stands expelled from all positions, including the primary membership of the party,” Mr Anbazhagan said, adding that a few others sent a detailed reply. Mr Anbazhagan said in the case of others, action would be taken depending on the nature of the reply.

He said the statement was issued as some people and a section of media were spreading reports seeking to create an impression that the DMK was going through a period of great confusion after Madurai episode.
