In a major setback to former Union Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi’s son M.K. Alagiri, the party high-command on Saturday dissolved Madurai city district unit, area and ward units functioning under it for violating party discipline.
Party general secretary K. Anbazhagan appointed a six member ad hoc committee headed by Madurai city district secretary G. Thalapathi, a supporter of DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin.
The committee will function till elections are held for the party organisations in the district. Other members of the ad hoc committee, dominated by Stalin supporters, include V. Velusamy, P. Kulandaivelu, M. Jayaram, M. Sethuramalingam, Packianathan and C. Chinnammal.
The party high-command dissolved the unit after posters announcing rival general council were put up by the supporters of Mr. Alagiri.
In an interview to a Tamil magazine, Mr. Alagiri had said no one could fill his place in the DMK. To a question why he was not active of late and his silence had caused a lot of confusion among his supporters, Mr. Alagiri said this rumour was a handiwork of those who could not digest his emergence. “This will pass after some time,” he had replied. The action comes a day ahead of DMK MP Kanimozhi’s birthday.
