The DMK on Tuesday appealed to the Election Commission to exempt a recently launched State government health insurance scheme from the code of conduct in force, in two assembly segments going to by-polls on December 19, and allow the enrolment of beneficiaries to go ahead.
Under the ‘Kalaignar Insurance Scheme for Life saving Treatments’ a cover of upto Rs. one lakh for four years is provided for treatment in private hospitals to families with an annual income of Rs. 72,000 or less, the premium for which is borne by the government.
In a memorandum to Chief Election Commissioner, DMK Parliamentary leader T.R. Baalu said enrolment of new members should not be brought to a halt during the by-polls since the process of issuing bio-metric cards had begun before by-polls for Tiruchendur and Vandavasi constituencies were announced.
The memorandum, a copy of which was made available to the media here, said such a move would affect the poor people who are awaiting treatment for serious ailments.
