The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), which was routed in the recent Assembly elections, will rise like a phoenix and make a comeback in Tamil Nadu politics, its leader Vijayakant has said.

He was addressing a marriage function of a party functionary here on Thursday. “Have you heard of a phoenix? It does not die, but only rises again,” he said.

Pointing out that a section of the media had written that he was scared of politics after suffering a defeat in the elections, Mr. Vijayakant said “I am not scared. I am always bold and you [media] should also not be scared.”

Speaking on the occasion, his wife Premalatha said the DMDK had joined the People’s Welfare Front (PWF) to provide a corruption-free and transparent government to protect the interest of the people. This is their first public function after the party suffered defeat in the elections and they were not upset by the results, she said.

“Captain [Vijayakant] was the central focus in the run up to the elections. When two paths were available to him, he chose the tough one keeping the welfare of people in mind. He failed in his first attempt. History has it that those who took the tough route tasted victory in the end,” Ms. Premalatha said.

She exhorted the party cadres, especially the youth, not to lose hope.

“Let us put up a united fight and stage a comeback,” she said.
