The outcome of the Pudukottai by-election had proved wrong Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's assertion that the DMDK would face a downward spiral in Tamil Nadu politics, party leader Vijayakant said on Friday.
“The people have proved that the DMDK will move upward in Tamil Nadu politics. The Chief Minister during her campaign said no other party would retain its deposit. But the DMDK has secured 30,500 (21.3 per cent) votes and retained its deposit,” Mr Vijayakant said in a statement.
He said by-elections in Tamil Nadu faced a strange situation, with the ruling parties dominating the scene by misusing power and official machinery.
“This has resulted in political parties staying away from the by-election and the Pudukottai by-election is not an exception,” he said, pointing out that a total of 32 Ministers, 10 Mayors and representatives of local bodies camped in the constituency to do election work.
Mr. Vijayakant said though the ruling party wanted to win the election by a margin of one lakh votes, the voters of the constituency had given a fitting reply and the DMDK had secured 21.3 per cent votes.
Karunanidhi mum
DMK president M. Karunanidhi, however, refused to comment on the results of the by-elections.
To a question whether the situation would have been different if the DMDK had joined hands with the DMK, he said, “I am not ready to discuss that.”
Asked about the sweeping of by-elections by the YSR Congress in Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Karunanidhi said he had expected such an outcome.
