Actor-politician Vijayakant-led Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam on Wednesday decided to field N. Zakir Hussain as its candidate for the June 12, 2012 by-election to the Pudukkottai Assembly constituency.

Mr. Hussain, Pudukkottai district secretary of the party, will be pitted against the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s V.R. Karthik Thondaiman.

With the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Communist Party of India, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Pattali Makkal Katchi deciding not to enter the fray, it could be a straight fight between the AIADMK and the DMDK in the bypoll caused by the death of CPI MLA S.P. Muthukumaran in a road accident on April 1, 2012.
