The Tiruvallur police have arrested Tiruttani MLA M. Arun Subramanian of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam for allegedly encroaching upon local body land, thereby preventing access to a waterbody to people belonging to the Irula community.

Enquiries reveal that a few days ago Tiruvallur Municipal officials lodged a complaint with the Tiruvallur district police stating that the MLA had raised a wall across the pathway abutting his property in Varadharaja Nagar that has been shown as ‘common road’ in their records.

The officials also claimed that they had received a petition from Irula families in Varadharaja Nagar stating that the MLA’s action had denied them access to the Coovum river.

A case has been filed against Arun Subramanian under section 447 of the IPC read with section 3 (1) (14) of Attrocities Act, the police said. A police team went to his residence in Manavala Nagar around 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

The MLA was taken to the Vellavedu police station around 3 a.m., briefed about the case and arrested.

Around 10-30 a.m. he was brought to the residence of Judicial Magistrate I, Tiruvallur, at Rajajipuram and remanded to judicial custody. He has been lodged at Puzhal Central Prison.
