The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) on Friday held a rally to highlight various issues including what the party described as the Centre’s failure to constitute the Cauvery Management Board, the appointment of M.K. Surappa as the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University and the Aruppukottai sex scandal, over which the party cadre demanded Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s resignation.
DMDK founder Vijayakant and his wife Premalatha Vijayakant participated in the event at Saidapet, which caused disruption to traffic in the area. Both of them were arrested.
Speaking to the media after his arrest, Mr. Vijayakant said the BJP was betraying the people of Tamil Nadu.
He questioned why Mr. Surappa [who was born in Karnataka] was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University at a time when Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were at loggerheads over the sharing of Cauvery water.
The party also sought the closure of the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi.
