District Collector M. Prashant M. Wadnere has participated in the digging of recharge pits across a stream in Mathalampadi village near here on Saturday.

Mr. Wadnere launched a watershed mission, tailor made for the district, to build 1,000 gabion check dams (made of rocks and mesh) across streams, brooks and rivers, to allow water to percolate on its way down. Digging of recharge pits and building cement mortar check dams are part of the mission.

To make it a movement rather than a mere government scheme, Mr. Wadnere exhorted people, farmers and activists to participate voluntarily in the work to build check dams and digging of pits. To evolve a value to the cause of conservation of water bodies and resources, Mr. Wadnere has made it a point to participate in these initiatives every Saturday. He works for two hours at the site.

On May 27, he participated in the digging of recharge pit across a stream in Mathalambadi village in Thurinjapuram block. It was carried out under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Members of non-governmental organisations, villagers and government officials joined him.
