Collector M. Karunakaran inaugurated the distribution of colour Electors’ Photo Identity Cards here on the occasion of National Voters’ Day on Sunday.

Distributing EPI cards to a few first-time voters and others, Dr Karunakaran said the district administration was taking all-out efforts by organising campaigns, rallies, human chains, pamphlet distribution, etc., to include all eligible voters in the electoral roll.

“As per the electoral roll released on January 5 following the summary revision, the district has 24,17,624 voters – 12,01,487 men voters, 12,16,086 women and 51 others. Since corrections are being carried out, voters could submit their applications to make necessary corrections in the voters list,” Dr Karunakaran said.

District Revenue Officer M.G. Kulandaivel, Corporation Commissioner R. Lakshmi, and Assistant Commissioners Samuel Selvaraj, Karuppasamy and Perumal were present.

An awareness rally on voter enrolment was flagged off by Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan from the Collecorate in Nagercoil. An awareness campaign van and blindfolded magician Abubakkar on a motorcycle were part of the rally. The rally went around the town and culminated at Hindu College.

New voters were given colour EPICs. The number of total voters in the district stood at 14.96 lakh. As many as 41,000 new voters had been enrolled, he added.
