CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government Officials’ Union on Wednesday urged the State government to disband the Staff Rationalisaton Committee announced to identify non-essential posts in government departments.

In a statement, R. Shanmugam, State President of the Union, said government employees were already burdened with additional work to execute all the schemes announced by the government. “Also, there are 2.5 lakh employee vacancies across various departments and the government employees are struggling with this extra burden and mental pressure due to this,” he said.

“While the employees are suffering like, the announcement by the government to reduce non-essential staff is disheartening,” he said.

As such doctors, nurses, and medical staff, teaching staff, office assistants, transport officials, security personnel who had been appointed on a contract basis were already upset on losing their livelihood. “This announcement has led to further discontent among government servants and teachers,” he said.

He added that the government which was functioning on the basis of former Chief Minister late Jayalalithaa’s footsteps should take note of her statements that government employees and teachers were important government functionaries connecting the common people with government. “Hence, the government should withdraw the announcement of forming a committee to look into staff rationalisation,” he said.
