The members of Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Disabled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) staged a demonstration on Friday demanding implementation of Government Order No. 27 that relaxed norms for disability assistance.

The demonstration was organised as part of the State-wide protest call demanding the government to implement the Chief Minister’s statement in the Assembly relaxing norms for disabled assistance.

The Chief Minister in February had announced under Rule 110 in the Assembly the relaxing of norms and entitlement of assistance to all disabilities above 40 percent. The announcement was in line with the disability assessment followed in other States. Based on the announcement, G.O. 27 was issued.

However, according to TARATDAC, while the announcement in the Assembly was made after the sustained protests by the disabled led by the association across the State, the G.O. was yet to be brought under implementation.

Also, no funds have been allotted so far, even after six months since the announcement was made.

In addition, the association also called for increasing the disability assistance from Rs.1,000 to Rs.3,000.
