Less than a week after shifting the police top brass in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts where murders, that too with caste overtones, were frequent, Director General of Police Ashok Kumar on Friday told the senior police officers to act swiftly and impartially in murder cases.

Chairing a review meeting here, Mr. Kumar instructed his subordinates to file charge sheets within 90 days, especially in murder cases. The DGP also warned his subordinates to be prepared to face action if they acted in a biased manner, according to participants. “The review meeting was a kind of counselling and motivation exercise for senior-level officers,” a police officer said.

After the three-hour-long meeting, Mr. Kumar said the policemen had been instructed to act in an impartial manner to improve the law and order situation.

On the spurt in recent murders that had caste overtones, the DGP said the police could not be present everywhere to prevent murders. However, all murder cases registered in the region had been solved and no case was pending.

On the attack unleashed on a woman judge near Velankanni in Nagapattinam district, the DGP said the police had zeroed in on the “personal motive” behind this incident. The DGP held discussions with Inspector General of Police, Southern Region, Abhay Kumar Singh; Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli Range, S. Murugan; Superintendent of Police V. Vikraman; Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, T.P. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Commissioners and DSPs.

Earlier, the DGP reviewed the law and order situation with police officers at a meeting in Tuticorin, in the wake of the recent caste-related murders in Srivaikuntam taluk.
