A video clip of a birthday celebration at a police station has gone viral on the internet, leaving the Tiruvarur police and the DMK red-faced. The clip shows the birthday celebration of a DMK students’ wing leader under detention at the Vaduvoor police station in Tiruvarur district, in which the ‘chief guest’ is a woman police inspector.
The DMK member was arrested along with several party cadre for staging protests in several areas of the district against the police firing and loss of lives in Thoothukudi during the anti-Sterlite agitation. When they were at the police station, the Nidamagalam Union students’ wing organiser, Mr. Sivachandran, lamented that he was in a police station on his birthday. The cadre then arranged an impromptu party for him, complete with a birthday cake.
Inspector Jayanthi sang the birthday song and fed Mr. Sivachandran the first piece of the cake. Then, Mr. Sivachandran distributed the cake to all those in the station, including the constables on duty.
The video clip of the celebration went viral on Saturday, landing all of them in trouble.
While the DMK cadre were chastised for not showing sensitivity to the Thoothukudi firing incident and the loss of lives of people on behalf of whom they staged the protests, Ms. Jayanthi was seen in bad light for ‘treating’ the DMK functionary in her custody.
Superintendent of Police (Tiruvarur) Mayilvahanan has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
On January 19, Ms. Jayanthi was in the news for publicly hoisting the AIADMK flag at Vaduvoor after bringing down a flag hoisted by a group owing allegiance to the R.K. Nagar MLA T.T.V. Dhinakaran.
