Most parts of the State may experience largely dry weather for two more days as the much awaited weather system, which was expected to bring rains, shows signs of moving away towards Andhra Pradesh coast.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the depression over southeast Bay of Bengal lies about 1,120 km southeast of Machlipatnam and is likely to move northwestwards and reach Andhra Pradesh coast by Friday.

Earlier, it was expected to move towards north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coast. However, the system has changed its direction as it started to consolidate.

S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said the system may intensify into deep depression by Friday. But, there are chances for the system to weaken as it reaches Andhra coast. “A few places in Tamil Nadu may get light to moderate showers. We are not expecting the system to influence any significant rainfall over the State. Chennai too may experience only light showers in some places till Friday,” he said. There may be a dip in night temperature due to northerly winds. The department has warned fishermen to stay away from fishing along and off the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts till Friday as strong winds are likely from the northeasterly direction.

While there are only three more weeks to go for the northeast monsoon to end, Mr.Balachandran said the season is not yet over and there are chances for rainfall to pick up over the State.
