Department to probe caning charge against teacher

April 21, 2013 10:30 am | Updated 10:30 am IST - NAMAKKAL:

The Elementary Education Department will conduct a detailed probe into the charges against a teacher of the government elementary school at Elachipalayam Union near Tiruchengode in Namakkal district that he caned a girl student of Class IV recently.

In a complaint to the headmaster, the girl’s parents said she had told them that the teacher caned her on the hands and back, saying that she did not study well.

She experienced pain and her hands and back were swollen, they said. The parents had told the headmaster that they would not send her to school till action was taken against the teacher. They also alleged delay on the part of the school in taking action.

“At a preliminary inquiry conducted by Assistant Elementary Education Officers, the teacher claimed that he did not beat the girl, but only threatened to beat her as she was not good in maths.

The officials pacified the agitated relatives and promised to take action against the teacher if he was found guilty, after which the parents promised to send her to school,” District Elementary Education Officer T. Arulmozhi Devi told The Hindu on Saturday. A memo was served on the teacher, seeking explanation. Department sources said the teacher went on long leave.
