PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Sunday sought nationalisation of private universities and demanded action against UGC officials who had recommended deemed status for 44 institutions that are now likely to be derecognised.

The Centre had made a submission in Supreme Court last week saying it would derecognise 44 deemed universities for lack of infrastructure and other required facilities.

“All deemed universities should either be affiliated to government—run universities or the government should take over them. They flout norms on admission, fees and reservation and sell engineering and medical seats, among others, for a fee,” Dr. Ramadoss told reporters here.

He said Tamil Nadu government should implead itself in the case to argue against the deemed universities and “I will take steps to implead myself,” he added.

He wanted an inquiry commission to be set up for taking action against UGC officials who had recommended deemed university status to the blacklisted institutions, 16 of them in Tamil Nadu alone.

On Pennagaram by-polls, Dr. Ramadoss wanted it to be held next month and claimed that his party would win.

Though scheduled to be held on January 20, the Pennagaram bypolls were postponed indefinitely following opposition from parties including AIADMK and PMK which had said the campaign dates coincided with Pongal festival.
