The Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK)’s plea to the election authorities to allot the ‘Candles’ symbol for it will be decided before the last date for filing of nominations.

This was submitted by the Election Commission (EC)’s counsel, G. Rajagopalan, when a petition by the MMK came up before the First Bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Satish K. Agnihotri and Justice M.M.Sundresh on Tuesday.

The party president, J.S.Rifayee, had filed the petition seeking a direction to the EC to allot the ‘Candles’ symbol to it. The MMK contested on the ‘Rail Engine’ symbol in four parliamentary constituencies in the 2009 elections. In the Assembly elections in 2011, the ‘Candles’ symbolwas allotted to it. The party is to field its candidate in the Mayiladuthurai constituency in the Lok Sabha elections. The EC had not yet allotted the symbol for the party.

Mr. Rajagopalan said the petitioner’s representation of March 20 would be decided before the last date of filing of nomination. Recording the submission, the Bench disposed of the petition stating that nothing survived for adjudication.

The EC also said it would take a decision on the Puthiya Tamilagam’s petition for allotment of ‘Television’ symbol at an appropriate date.
