Death toll in LPG explosion rises to seven

The death toll in the LPG explosion at a house at Attaiyampatti in Salem district a couple of weeks ago climbed to seven on Monday.

Gas cylinder

The victim was identified as T. Sandhya (23), daughter of A. Deverajan (50), from whose house LPG that leaked from a domestic gas cylinder exploded, on November 20.

Attaiyampatti police said that she suffered only about 30 per cent burns but her internal organs were badly damaged in the incident. “She was admitted and getting treated in the Government Super Speciality Hospital, in Salem, till she died on Monday”, the police added.

Five persons – including a four-year-old girl – were killed while seven others were injured when the explosion took place in a residential complex on Mettukadai Street in Attayampatti Village, nearly 25 km from Salem. Deverajan (50), his wife Malliga (45) and Sandhya’s daughter Deepadharshini (4) died on the same day.

Sandhya’s brother Kumar (25) who suffered more than 50 per cent burns died in the hospital on November 27. Their neighbours Ayesha (38) and her son Siddique (17) also died the same day.

Treatment

Her husband Ahmedullah (45), son Aasif (13) and daughter Sahitha (14) who were badly injured in the incident after they got caught below the debris of their house are still undergoing treatment in the hospital.
