Death toll goes up in Sivakasi fire accident

The death toll in Wednesday's >fire accident at Munna Fireworks Factory near Sivakasi went up to three with the third worker succumbing to burns in the early hours of Thursday.

The police said that D.Govinda Babu (19) of Koomapatti, who sustained 100 per cent burn injuries died at the Government hospital in Sivakasi at around 12.45 a.m. Two workers, S. Alphonse (55) and V. Muniyasamy (30), were killed on the spot in an explosion triggered by a friction while handling chemicals.

The Malli police have booked the unit owner, J. Vairamuthukumar of Sivakasi and the foreman, R. Rajasekar, Naduvapatti for the accident for negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance, for endangering life or personal safety, causing death by negligence and under the provisions of Indian Explosives Act. The police have picked up Rajasekar for questioning.
