The death of a 19-year-old boy, studying second year in a private arts and science college here, sparked tension, as a large section of students alleged that the boy had committed suicide due to torture by his teachers.

Police said Thanesh (19), son of Nagarajan of Unnamalaikadai Sirukaraivilai near Marthandam, was studying in a college here. On Friday, the teacher had scolded him as he came late to class. Depressed over this, the boy had committed suicide at his residence late last night.

On hearing the news of his death, a section of students resorted to a flash strike and demanded action against the teacher. Inspector of Police Muthu, accompanied by a large posse of police, rushed to the spot and assured them of action following which the students dispersed. Based on a complaint from the boy’s father, the police have registered a case.
