Day two witnesses many crorepatis filing nomination papers in TN

Several crorepatis figure among the 39 candidates of the AIADMK who filed nominations on Tuesday, the second day after the nominations opened.

Five candidates of the MDMK, including general secretary Vaiko, BJP state chief Pon. Radhakrishnan and senior leader L. Ganesan, who is contesting from South Chennai, were among the 131 persons who filed papers. Mr. Vaiko and Pon Radhakrishnan also join the ‘crorepati’ club. Mr. Ganesan said he had only Rs 3.27 lakh including a rudraksha mala.

K. Parasuraman, AIADMK candidate for the Thanjavur constituency, is one of the richest among the partymen in the race. As per his returns along with the nomination papers, he had movable assets worth Rs 2.02 crore and immovable property valued at Rs 12.29 crore, besides jewels. Another AIADMK crorepati is Mahendran who is contesting from Pollachi. He has assets worth over Rs. 14 crore.

AIADMK’s Parliamentary party leader and candidate for Karur seat M. Thambidurai declared that he owned immovable property worth Rs. 2.88 lakh. But his wife appears to be richer, disclosing properties worth Rs. 2.85 crore and their daughter Namrata holding properties worth Rs. 1.33 crore. The value of Mr. Thambidurai’s movable asset is just Rs. 13.43 lakh compared to his wife’s possession valued at Rs. 8.27 crore. Namrata has Rs. 62.58 lakh worth movable properties.

In the southern region, most of the AIADMK candidates are ‘crorepatis,’ except K R P Prabakaran, the candidate for Tirunelveli constituency. His net worth is only Rs. 27 lakh, while the Madurai candidate R. Gopalakrishnan has assets worth Rs. 7 crore. According to the affidavit filed by Mr. Vaiko, he has assets worth Rs. 1.88 crore. Mr. Vaiko’s immovable assets are 22 acres of agricultural land valued at Rs. 33 lakh in his native village, Kalingapatti. Non-agricultural land jointly owned by him and his wife Renugadevi in Tenkasi is valued at Rs. 7 lakh, a commercial building in Sankarankoil Taluk worth Rs. 3 lakh and an inherited residential building worth Rs. 1.42 crore. He has liabilities worth Rs. 1.37 lakh. Ms. Renugadevi has got movable and immovable assets worth Rs. 1.47 crore.

The AIADMK’s Erode candidate, Selvakumara Chinnaiyan, has declared movable and immovable assets worth over Rs. 4,74 crore.

In all 71 AIADMK candidates filed their papers for all the 39 constituencies at an appointed hour considered auspicious. In the case of DMK, six persons, including alternative candidates, submitted papers for three seats. Five MDMK candidates also filed papers.

As on date, 198 persons filed nominations. For the Alandur assembly seat, three submitted papers.
