Dalit writer Durai Guna was attacked near his residence by a group of villagers during the community ‘Pongal’ celebration at Kulanthiranpattu near Karambakudi on Friday.
Mr. Guna told The Hindu over phone that police personnel from Karambakudi station who were on duty at the village immediately intervened and chased away the attackers.
He preferred a complaint with the police, identifying the names of four persons who attacked him.
“It was customary for raising donation from all households in the village for celebrating the community festival. But, this year none had sought any donation from my parents,” he said.
Mr.Guna’s family had been subject to social boycott and he was forced to leave his village since caste-Hindus did not like what he had written in his novella Oorar Varaintha Oviyam .
E.S.Uma, Superintendent of Police, said a complaint has been received from the writer.
After many years, he returned to his native village to celebrate Pongal.
