Stage demonstration at Annamalai University
Hundreds of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students of Annamalai University staged a demonstration on Monday demanding total fee concessions for all the courses offered by the university.
Citing a 2012 government order which provides certain concessions to students of self-financing courses, they demanded the university waive their fee. Velusamy, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, and T.Deivasigamani (SC/ST students’ coordinator) held talks with the students. Mr Deivasigamani told them that the said GO was meant for the self financing courses only and it should not be assumed that it was an omnibus order encompassing all the courses offered by the university.
The university was a government aided institution and therefore, engineering, agricultural and humanities faculties did not come under the purview of the GO. However, the eligible candidates of these courses would get annual scholarships. Whereas, the medical courses such as MBBS, BPT, B.Pharm and B.Sc (Nursing) were self-financing courses run by the university and candidates pursuing these courses were eligible to get the concession as per the order. Convinced by the reply the students dispersed peacefully after a while.
Later, the university issued a circular stating that all the government concessions due to the deserving students are being given unfailingly. The students’ demand for full fee waiver was pending before the Adi Dravaida Welfare Department.
