With reports of five more deaths coming in from different parts of Cuddalore district, the death toll in Friday's devastating cyclone went up to 31 in the district, taking the total number of fatalities in the disaster to 48 in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The Union territory accounted for eight deaths, and Tamil Nadu 40, nine of them in districts other than Cuddalore.
Officials were struggling to restore electricity and ensure regular water supply. Tankers were mobilised from various districts to bring water, while Aavin rushed refrigeration units to maintain milk supply.
Relief work reviewed
Rural Industries Minister M.C. Sampath reviewed relief work and later said normality would be restored in three days. Supply of water, petroleum products, kerosene and milk had been partially restored, he told presspersons.

I just want to tell you that the government is just spreading a rumour that they are doing everything in emergency situation..still in my home town of cuddalore port 100 trees have fallen in our streets its not yet cleared !! no way out from my steps of my home!! no water !! no milk!! this is the real situation as of now !! i have loads of pictures and videos in my mobile which have been shot live in my terrace during the thane cyclone ground fall!
I really appreciated the government to take all the necessary steps to recover the normal life.India is developing country as we are telling and we are dreaming that in 2020 India will became the developed country. If we think, india is developing country but still while recovering the cyclone-hit or any incident will happen in our country still the process is very slow.
So sad of the people. Thanks for publishing the news so that everyone can know the news
I appreciate the efforts of both the Governments in trying to bring normalcy. But a fact always hounds me, why in India, even after so many years of Independence we follow old technology in Civil maintenance and in disaster management? We are considered one of the leading developing countries but the technology we adopt for rescue efforts after any calamity is mostly primitive and outdated.Even third world countries employ modern machinery in them,I am sure its not a question of being able to afford, but a lack of decision making at the administrative level.Going through the media and the public reaction, one gets a feeling that the present CM is capable of making bold and Innovative decisions.I would like to request through the medium of 'The Hindu', the CM should give it a serious thought and take the neccessary steps at the earliest and set an example to the other states, in managing disasters in any form.
