Steps have been taken to give customised three-wheelers to the differently abled persons with financial allocation from MPs constituency development fund, Collector M. Karunakaran has said.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday after handing over the customised three-wheelers, Dr. Karunakaran said the State government had sanctioned 40 customised three-wheelers meant for the differently abled in the district for the year 2013–2014, and 14 of them had already been handed over to them.

On Tuesday, the remaining 26 customized three-wheelers, worth Rs. 14.03 lakh, were given to the beneficiaries.

“We’ve initiated steps to give the customized three-wheelers to the physically challenged with allocation from the MPs constituency development fund or the local area development fund of the Rajya Sabha members,” Dr. Karunakaran said. In Tirunelveli district, 6,600 mentally deranged persons had been given a total monthly assistance of Rs. 11.88 crore and over 1,400 physically challenged persons Rs. 2.58 crore.

For maintaining the 118 persons suffering from muscular dystrophy, Rs. 21.24 lakh had been given, he added.

Rajya Sabha MPs S. Muthukaruppan and Vijila Sathyananth, Mayor E. Bhuvaneshwari, Tirunelveli MLA Nainar Nagenthran and Sankarankovil MLA S. Muthuselvi were present.
