In 36 hours, 41 student teams strived to come up with innovative solutions to problems faced by industries during Make-a-Thon, a three-day competition organised by the VIT University. Make-a-Thon, which was organised by the School of Electrical Engineering, saw participation of five organisations – four industries and a medical college. The organisations asked students to come up with solutions for their problems by 12 noon on Sunday.

In the end, the first prize of Rs. 10,000 went to a team that came up with a device called “Heart Seat.” This device enables persons going for workouts in gyms to monitor their heartbeat. The second prize of Rs. 7,500 went to a team that came up with “Bandaholic,” a sensor fitted to the steering or rooftop of a car to detect if the driver is drunk and if drunk, the engine gets locked immediately, and a SMS alert is sent. The third prize was bagged by students who came up with “Medical pill reminder,” a device to remind patients about taking medicines. A. Narayanan, pro vice chancellor of VIT and P. Arulmozhivarman, professor and dean, School of Electrical Engineering were present.
