The CPI(M) on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to District Collector Prashant M.Wadnere demanding action against the followers of godman Nityananda for allegedly encroaching Pavalakkundru, a small hillock.

CPI(M) state committee member M.Veerabadran, in a petition to the Collector, had complained that the followers of the godman had set up a shed in the Pavalakkundru.

He told The Hindu that they started performing poojas in the encroached space.

“They have encroached upon a huge tract of land on the hillock and fenced it with barbed wire. People living on the foothills of the hillock were denied to access the peak. We intervened and petitioned officials and now we have petitioned the Collector, Mr.Veerabadran said, adding that the officials had taken a look at the encroachment on Thursday and promised to remove it.

Mr.Wadnere said he had received a complaint in this regard and that officials would inspect the place and take action.

In 2007, the same group allegedly levelled a huge tract of land in the hillock and attempted to encroach the land. But their attempt was foiled after protests were launched by the CPI (M) party members.
