CPI stir on July 8

June 27, 2011 01:06 am | Updated 01:06 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The national secretary of the Communist Party of India, D. Raja, on Sunday said that his party would organise a nation wide protest on July 8 to highlight the “sufferings” of the Sri Lankan Tamils.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Raja said party cadres would hold demonstrations at various places in the country.

Welcoming the resolution passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly seeking economic sanctions on Sri Lanka and retrieval of Katchatheevu, he said the party members would raise the issue in the coming session of Parliament.

He urged the Central government to renegotiate the agreements which were reached with Sri Lanka, particularly on the issue of Katchatheevu Island, as a protest against the atrocities committed against the Tamils during the war.
