The State secretary of Communist Party of India, D. Pandian, on Sunday criticised political parties indulging in ‘casteist politics’ and called upon the State government to take stern action against people damaging public property.

“We should not accept political parties run on the basis of caste. Tamil Nadu is a progressive State and is in the forefront in many respects. Burning buses or damaging public property is not the way to fight or highlight issues. There are other democratic ways of doing it,” he told reporters here.

Stoning and burning buses could not be accepted and people should resist such actions. The government should take action against those who indulge in such activities as per the law, he said, alluding to the recent incidents of arson following the arrest of PMK leaders.

Mr. Pandian also emphasised the need for inter-State linking of rivers and said the Supreme Court had favoured it. The State government should press for linking of rivers.
