CPI leaders meet Jayalalithaa

June 07, 2012 02:24 am | Updated July 12, 2016 12:34 am IST - CHENNAI:

CPI State secretary D. Pandian and senior leader R. Nallakannu met Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at the Secretariat on Wednesday, triggering speculation that the party could support the AIADMK candidate in the Pudukottai by-election.

Mr. Nallakannu scotched the speculation saying the by-election did not figure during their meeting.

“We wanted to meet her long ago and could get an appointment only today. We took up the Kudankulam issue with her and wanted the government to withdraw cases booked against protestors who have been fighting against the project in a peaceful manner.”

Though there was a general discussion on the present political trend, the by-election was not discussed, he said. The Pudukottai seat fell vacant following the death of CPI legislator P. Muthukumaran.

The ruling AIADMK did not allot the seat to the CPI and fielded its own candidate.
