A special court in Chennai on Monday acquitted V.N. Sudhakaran, once foster son of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa from a criminal case registered against him in 2001 for allegedly possessing heroin in his house. Other accused namely K. Baskaran and Moinudeen were acquitted by the court.

Holding that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them beyond reasonable doubt, C. Chinnappan, Principal Special Judge for cases under Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substance Act said "This court decides that they were not guilty. Hence, they were acquitted."

In the charge sheet, the city police alleged that Mr. Sudhakaran had been in the habit of using the prohibited substance. The police seized the substance from his bedroom and office of his friend weighing 16 grams and 72 grams respectively in 2001.

Along with Mr. Sudhakaran, Mr. V.Baskaran and Mr. Moinudeen were cited as accused in this case while another Mr. Salahuddin remained absconding.
