Couple held for beating up children

S. Mari (26) and his wife Muthulakshmi (24) of Kothamarikuppam in Melpatti police station limits in Gudiyatham taluk were arrested by the police on Tuesday on a charge of beating up the children of Lokeshwari (26), sister of Muthulakshmi, when they were entrusted to the care of the couple.

According to the police, Lokeshwari and her husband Vimalraj (28), labourers of Villupuram entrusted their children Ashwini (4) and Ashwin (3) to Muthulakshmi and Mari before going to Chennai for work about three weeks ago.

Meanwhile, they got information on Monday from the village that their children were severely beaten up by the couple.

Shocked

They immediately rushed to Kothamarikuppam where they found to their shock that the children had been badly beaten up.

On a complaint, the Melpatti police arrested Mari and Muthulakshmi under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 294-B (using obscene language) of the Indian Penal Code.

The children have been admitted to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, Adukkamparai for treatment.
